The Music of

The Changeling

by Paul Herbert

(Musical Supervision & Direction)

The score for this piece has been composed and performed in its entirety by the cast. We began the development and construction of the material by exploring the tonal world of 80's music, listening to the specific orchestration and harmonic elements that make the era so iconic and identifiable.

The cast we asked to immerse themselves in this music and then begin to develop a musical theme or motif that related to their own character in The Changeling. We then moved on to explore the fundamentals of Spanish music, looking specifically at its traditional characteristics, harmonic construction, form, melodic modes and key rhythmic ingredients.

Each cast member was asked to develop a variation of their theme that had these Spanish characteristics. The actors shared their work remotely and we discussed how to realise and record the musical performances in isolation. This is technically quite a challenge!

Within this process we also explored how the musical themes could interact with one another in the same way that the characters do within the text. This proved to be a good stimulus for composition and the orchestration of the work.

Essentially, we developed a music library for the show from which we could select the appropriate piece of music for each scene, transition and sequence.

All music in 'The Changeling'  was written and performed by the cast.
